Voices Fall 2018 - Introduction (pp. 3)

Each of the pieces included in this issue, while written for various creative writing and literature courses at Lewis University, demonstrate an awareness of the rhetorical power of the textual, linguistics, and visual.  Much to the reader's delight, writers rose to the challenge of thoroughly and rigorously responding to writing prompts and assignments, making the works in their issue multifaceted as they range from persuasive to imaginative to satirical in their respective goals.

The Poetry section features elegant poems by Sigma Tua Delta members Nichole Olson and Jacob Volk.  Olson's "Elegy in Red" captures the alluring images of Crest Hill, while Volk's "Natural Distraction" that takes readers on a stroll through nature, snapshotting the ways in which the world around us can leave us both in awe and inspired.

The Essay section is comprised scholarly pieces that contain insightful, innovative, and thought-provoking ideas and claims from applying a Jungian approach to Eliot's "The Hollow Man" to analyzing the intricate personality makeups of characters in Shakespeare's "Hamlet."  The short story section includes creative works such as Eryn Stochelski's dramatic-thriller, "Playing the Fool," Samantha Moffett's beautifully imaginative and poetic "The Shark," and Noah Slowik's "Memory Injections" that carries readers into a world where even the smallest thoughts can be artificialized and controlled.

The works included in this issue encompass a variety of techniques and concern a wide spectrum of subjects.  Intermixed in this issue are pieces of artwork and photography featured by both Art majors and English majors.  Thus, this issue weaves a collective literary tale and a visual tale as well.  It is my hope that readers enjoy these selections as much as I do.

Voices Fall 2017 - Intro (pp. 5)

The theme for this issue of Voices, the literary magazine of Lewis University's Rho Lambda chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, is multimodal composition.  The term "multimodal," as it has increasingly been used over the past several decades, refers to composition practices that account for the fuller range of communication modes use in human interaction such as more traditional modes such as textual and linguistics, but also aural and visual.  Collectively, these multiple modes of communication more accurately represent how audiences across messages and construct meaning for themselves.

Write On! Spring 2009 - Thank Yous (pp. 3)

Write On! is a literary magazine comprised of writings gathered from Lewis University's English majors.  A writer's notebook is a writer's prized possession, holding tidbits of parts belonging to a story, essay, poem, or idea.  These scribbled-on books follow the writer wherever he/she goes.  Inside, you may find the characters' names, dialogue, plot points, heartbreak, grocery lists, to-do-lists, or any other lingering thoughts that come to a writer's mind.  Inside this literary publication, you will catch a glimpse of what a writer's notebook looks like.
